Asian Handicaps - Sports Betting

This section of the Sports Gambling Tutorial on Sports Betting provides an explanation of Asian handicaps in sports betting.  Asian handicaps are popular sports bets in the Far East and are potentially less risky than traditional home win / draw / away win style sports betting.  With Asian handicaps you simply bet on the favorite or the underdog.

The handicap is intended to level the playing field between the two teams so that a sports bet for or against a team is equally likely to pay off.  The Asian handicap tries to make the match even.

For example, in a UK football match, the favorite team is given a handicap according to the extra amount of goals it is expected to score.  The favorite must overcome that handicap for the sports bet to pay.  Conversely, the underdog gets that handicap added to its score.
