Sports Betting
Welcome to the Sports Gambling Tutorial on Sports Betting. Here we will discuss basic
sports betting options commonly available in both the European style of sports betting
and the North American style of sports betting including explanations of the
sports bets and odds.
These two styles of sports betting are different in many ways, both in terms of how the
odds are expressed and the terminology used. For example, in a North American money line
sports bet, a team that is +140 would be a 40 point underdog. This means that for every
£100 wagered the bettor would win £140. The total sports wager return would be £240
(the winnings plus the original amount of the sports bet). In a European style of sports betting,
these sports odds would be expressed in decimals as 2.40 - meaning that for a £100 wager the sports bettor
would receive £240 - the 2.40 representing the amount won on the wager and the return of the original
sports bet. In the UK, it is also common to see sports odds expressed as fractions, rather than decimals.
This Sports Betting Tutorial will explain some of the basics of the different styles of sports betting.
For European sports betting we will look at odds, multiple bets, pools and totes, and Asian handicaps.
For North American sports betting we will review point spread wagers, money line wagers, total score (over-under)
sports bets, parlays, teasers, and if bets. There are significant differences between the styles of
sports betting but there is also substantial overlap. Put aside the differences in sports betting
terminology and the substance is much the same.
For example, UK and European sports bettors prefer to place sports bets using a
sports odds format. In other parts of the world,
money line wagers are the preferred sports betting
format. The end result is the same, it is simply a matter of the sports betting terminology
one is used to. Spend a little time reading about the different sports bets and it becomes
just as easy to use one format as the other.
To begin the Sports Betting Tutorial, simply go to the specific type of sports bet listed above
that you would like to review. You can also go to the sports betting sections listed below
to see sports betting information and resources according to the specific sport that you are
interested in. While much of the basics of sports betting is constant among various sports,
there are also certain types of bets that are either popular with sports bettors handicapping that
sport, or bets that are simply peculiar to that sport.
For example, point spread wagers are overwhelmingly
the most popular type of sports bet with American
NFL football betting. On the other hand, the
preferred bet with UK and European football betting is an
odds sports betting format. Some
sports have bets that are peculiar to that sport. Examples include "run line" bets in
American baseball betting or puck line wagers in
ice hockey betting.
Use the Sports Gambling Tutorial on Sports Betting to refresh yourself on various sports bets
or learn new styles of sports betting. With just a little effort, you will soon be comfortable
with every type of sports bet.
